Your bank balance isn't your plan: what “monthly plan remaining” means
October 8, 2026 · 4 min read
Your checking balance answers one question: how much money is in the account right now. It doesn't tell you how much of that money is already spoken for. Rent, the phone bill, and a streaming renewal next Tuesday all live inside that balance until they're paid.
Start with the cash you spend from
Count the accounts you spend from day to day — usually checking and savings. Leave out investments and credit lines. Selling stock or borrowing to cover groceries isn't a plan; it's an emergency.
Set aside upcoming bills
Subtract the bills you expect in the next 30 days. A 30-day window is long enough to catch rent and most monthly bills, and short enough to stay accurate. What's left is your cash after upcoming bills.
Check your unspent budget
If you have a monthly budget, look at how much of it is still unspent after this month's spending and set-asides. You might have $1,500 in cash after bills but only $400 left in this month's budget.
Monthly plan remaining = the smaller of (cash after upcoming bills) and (unspent budget this month). The smaller number is the one that respects both your bills and the plan you made.
It isn't free money
The number tells you how much of this month's plan remains — not how much you can spend on anything. Some of it may still be meant for bills coming up, especially ones your budget already counts. Treat it as room in your plan, and check what's coming before a big purchase.
When the number is zero
If upcoming bills are larger than your cash, nothing remains in your plan until money comes in. That's uncomfortable to see, but it's far better to see it now than when a bill bounces.
